What is Main image?

Also known as Hero image

The main image is the first product photo shown in search results and at the top of the listing. On Amazon it must be on a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255) with the product filling at least 85% of the frame.

Why it matters

Main image requirements are a compliance matter, not a style choice. A main image with a prop, a border, added text or an off-white background can get the listing suppressed — and it is the single most common reason a new listing never appears in search.

Uploading at 1,600px on the longest side enables zoom, which measurably lifts conversion. Conversion feeds ranking, so image resolution is indirectly a ranking factor.

Not every marketplace shares these rules. Etsy does not require a white background, and styled lifestyle photography often converts better there.
