Amazon FBA Fee Calculator

Amazon takes two separate cuts of an FBA sale, and sellers routinely confuse them. The referral fee is a percentage of the sale price and depends on your category. The fulfilment fee is a flat charge that depends on the size tier and weight of the unit, not on what you charge for it.

That second point is where margins get destroyed. A product that just tips from small standard into large standard can gain most of a dollar in fulfilment cost without a single dimension changing noticeably. Enter your numbers below to see both fees and what is actually left.

Method

How this is calculated

Two fees, calculated independently, then subtracted from your price. The order matters because the size tier drives the fulfilment fee before weight does.

  1. 1

Size tier is decided by dimensions first

Amazon sorts your three dimensions longest to shortest and checks them against the tier table before it looks at weight. Small standard means the longest side is 15 inches or under, the median 12 or under, the shortest 0.75 or under, and the unit is at most 16 ounces. Anything larger on any one of those falls to large standard.

  2. 2

Referral fee is a percentage of the whole sale price

Most categories sit at 15%. Consumer electronics is 8%, clothing steps 5/10/17% by price band, and jewelry drops from 20% to 5% above $250. The percentage applies to the full price the buyer pays, not to your profit. Amazon also enforces a $0.30 minimum per item.

  3. 3

Fulfilment fee comes from a weight band inside the tier

Each size tier has its own ladder of weight bands. Small standard runs in two-ounce steps. Large standard runs in four-ounce steps to three pounds, then adds a flat charge for every additional four ounces. This is why shaving an ounce off packaging sometimes saves nothing and sometimes saves real money — it depends whether it crosses a band boundary.

  4. 4

Net profit is what survives both

Selling price, minus unit cost, minus referral fee, minus fulfilment fee. Net margin is that number as a percentage of the selling price. If it is negative, the calculator says so plainly rather than showing a small positive number.

  5. 5

    What this deliberately leaves out

Storage fees, returns processing, PPC spend, and inbound shipping to Amazon's warehouses are all real costs that vary too much by seller to model honestly. Treat the output as your ceiling, not your take-home.

Reading the result

What a healthy margin actually looks like

A common rule of thumb is that a product needs at least 25–30% net margin after Amazon fees to survive advertising, returns and the occasional price war. The calculator above stops before advertising, so treat its margin figure as the budget you have to spend on everything else.

If the number it returns is under 20%, the product is unlikely to tolerate Sponsored Products at competitive bids. Our break-even ACoS calculator takes the margin from here and tells you the exact ad spend percentage at which the sale stops making money.

The other lever most sellers underuse is the size tier. Before locking in packaging, check whether trimming the shortest dimension moves the unit from large standard into small standard. That single change is often worth more than a supplier negotiation.
