Return Policy Generator
Every marketplace requires a return policy, and most sellers either copy one from a competitor or paste a template that contradicts the platform's own rules. Both are worse than they look: a policy that undercuts the marketplace's baseline is unenforceable, and one that overpromises is binding.

Return Policy Generator: what actually matters
Your policy cannot undercut the marketplace's
Every major marketplace sets a baseline return right, and a seller policy stricter than that baseline is simply not enforced — the platform applies its own rules and, in a dispute, its own decision. Writing “no returns” where the platform guarantees thirty days achieves nothing except a customer who feels misled before they have even contacted you.
Statutory rights sit above both
Consumer law in many jurisdictions grants rights that neither you nor the marketplace can remove by policy — the EU and UK right of withdrawal being the most commonly encountered. Whatever your policy says, those rights apply where the buyer is covered by them. A policy that appears to waive them is a compliance risk rather than a protection.
The three things buyers actually look for
How long they have, what condition the item must be in, and who pays return postage. Everything else is detail. Answering those three plainly at the top reduces pre-purchase questions and post-purchase disputes more than any amount of carefully worded protection further down.
Returns are a margin line, not an exception
If one order in twenty comes back and cannot be resold, that is five percent off the top of everything you sell — frequently larger than the margin being protected by a restrictive policy. It belongs in your pricing rather than in your terms. The profit margin calculator on this site has a field for exactly this.
FAQ
Common questions
Is the generated policy legal advice?
No. It produces a structured draft written to the marketplace's stated requirements. It is not legal advice, and consumer law varies by jurisdiction. Have it reviewed before publishing if you are unsure.
Can I set a shorter return window than the marketplace allows?
You can write it, but it will not be enforced. The platform applies its own baseline in any dispute, so a stricter policy mainly damages trust without changing outcomes.
Do I need a different policy per marketplace?
Generally yes, because the baselines differ. A policy written for one platform's rules will either contradict another's or leave gaps its buyers expect you to fill.
Does this cover EU and UK withdrawal rights?
Those rights exist independently of any policy text and apply where the buyer is covered by them. Treat statutory rights as sitting above whatever the policy says rather than as something the policy grants.
