Etsy SEO: how the 13 tags actually work
Etsy gives every listing thirteen tags of twenty characters. Most sellers fill six. How Etsy search reads them, and why empty slots cost reach.

- Listing optimisation
Etsy gives every listing thirteen tags, each up to twenty characters. Most listings use six or seven. Every empty slot is reach you have declined for free.
That is the whole of Etsy SEO in one paragraph, and it is why Etsy rewards a completely different discipline from Amazon. On Amazon the primary lever is a hidden backend keyword field. On Etsy it is thirteen visible slots that most sellers cannot be bothered to fill.
Tags are the ranking lever, not the description
Etsy's search reads your title and your tags. The description is barely used for matching — it exists to convert someone who has already arrived.
This surprises sellers coming from Shopify or Google SEO, where long-form copy carries real weight. On Etsy, a beautifully written 800-word description with six tags will lose to a plain description with thirteen well-chosen ones.
How to use twenty characters
Twenty characters is enough for a phrase, and phrases are what buyers type.
Single words are the most common mistake. necklace is one tag competing
against millions of listings. gold layered necklace is one tag competing
against thousands, and it is what someone actually searches.
| Weak tag | Better tag | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| gift | gift for new mom | Matches an actual query |
| earrings | hypoallergenic studs | Narrower, higher intent |
| custom | personalized name gift | The buyer's own phrasing |
| handmade | handmade ceramic mug | Adds the product |
Aim for two- and three-word phrases throughout. Use the full thirteen.
Do not repeat your title in the tags
Your title is already indexed. Repeating those exact words in tags wastes slots without adding coverage.
Tags earn their keep on what the title has no room for:
- Occasions.
wedding gift,housewarming,graduation gift - Recipients.
gift for sister, for coffee lovers, teacher gift - Style and aesthetic.
boho decor,minimalist jewelry,cottagecore - Materials and technique.
sterling silver, hand thrown, oak wood - Colour variations that did not fit the title
Titles: 140 characters, but the first 40 do the work
Etsy allows 140 characters in a title. It weights the first 40 or so most heavily in search, and mobile truncates around there too.
So the practical target is roughly 60 characters: enough to carry the main phrase plus one qualifier, short enough that a shopper reads the whole thing.
Front-load what a buyer would type. Personalized Birth Flower Necklace is a
better opening than Handmade Beautiful Unique Gift Jewelry — Personalized...,
where the searchable terms arrive after the fluff.

Etsy is one catalogue worldwide
Unlike Amazon, which runs 20 separate country marketplaces with different limits and localisation, Etsy is a single global storefront. There is no per-country variant to maintain and no localised listing to write.
That makes Etsy the lowest-friction second channel for most sellers: one listing, one catalogue, worldwide reach. It also means your competition is worldwide, which is exactly why leaving six tag slots empty is expensive.
Photos: Etsy is not Amazon
A pure white packshot is a compliance requirement on Amazon. On Etsy it often underperforms.
Etsy buyers are shopping for something made, and the platform's own guidance pushes lifestyle context, process shots and scale references. Show the item in a setting, in use, in a hand. Show it being made if that is part of the story.
Reusing your Amazon main image on Etsy is compliant but flat. It is the single most common cross-listing mistake.
What Etsy SEO is not
Two things worth saying plainly, because a lot of Etsy advice blurs them:
Tags are not keyword research. Choosing good tags is a writing and empathy problem — what would this buyer type? It is not the same as having search-volume data. ListIQ Pro does not provide keyword volume databases, demand data or rank tracking, and neither does Etsy's own interface. If you want that, dedicated research tools exist and are better at it.
Stuffing does not work. Thirteen variations of necklace is not thirteen
tags, it is one tag repeated. Etsy's search is looking for coverage across
distinct queries, not density on one.
A practical order of operations
- Write the title first, front-loaded, aiming for ~60 characters.
- List every phrase a buyer might type. Aim for twenty candidates.
- Cross out anything already in the title.
- Cut to thirteen, favouring two- and three-word phrases.
- Write the description for the human who already clicked — the first two lines show before the fold; everything after is for someone who scrolled.
- Photograph for context, not for a white background.
Generate it instead. The Etsy listing generator writes the title, all thirteen tags and the description in one pass, shaped to how Etsy search actually matches rather than copied from an Amazon listing. One credit per listing, and the free plan gives you 10 a month with no card required.
Selling the same product elsewhere too? Output is written per marketplace rather than reused, because eBay's 80-character title and Amazon's backend field reward completely different things.
